July 17, 2025 – XMTP, the largest and most secure decentralized messaging network, today announced the successful closure of a $20 million Series B funding round. This significant investment, led by USV (Union Square Ventures) and joined by five other prominent investors, will fuel XMTP’s core mission: to build the most secure, decentralized messaging protocol, support any identity across any digital ecosystem, and help power the next generation of messaging applications.
This funding comes as XMTP Labs, the team contributing to the development of the XMTP protocol, recently rebranded to Ephemera. Ephemera is dedicated to building private and decentralized messaging solutions and growing the XMTP ecosystem through infrastructure R&D and the development of next-gen applications like Convos.
"We are thrilled to announce our $20M Series B to fuel XMTP’s mission," stated the XMTP team. "XMTP is rebuilding secure messaging from first principles: secure, decentralized, identity-native, and open for developers. This investment empowers Ephemera to accelerate our work in creating foundational technology for the next layer of the internet – a secure and decentralized messaging protocol designed to last forever, and encrypted messengers that make using crypto as simple as sending a message."
XMTP has rapidly emerged as the leading standard for Web3 messaging, boasting over 2 million connected identities, engaging thousands of developers, and powering more than 60 production applications. This widespread adoption highlights XMTP’s role as the trusted backbone for secure, private, and verifiable communication across various apps and wallets.
Key Innovations and Features Driving XMTP's Growth:
- Enterprise-Grade Security: XMTP is built on the IETF-standard Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, the same open-source security foundation trusted by major tech companies like Mozilla, Google, Wire, and Cisco. Its fully audited implementation ensures perfect forward secrecy and post-compromise security, guaranteeing that messages can never be retroactively decrypted.
- Flexible Identity Foundation: The protocol allows any collection of wallet addresses to form a unified messaging identity. It seamlessly supports the full spectrum of Web3 identities, including naming systems (ENS, Base, Lens), social platforms (Farcaster, Lens), and smart accounts (Safe, ERC-4337 wallets), all secured through simple wallet signatures.
- Built-in Spam Protection: XMTP provides network-wide spam protection, allowing users to block unwanted messages once, and that preference is respected across all applications on the network. This gives users unprecedented control over their communication.
- Unruggable Infrastructure: Designed for true decentralization, XMTP's infrastructure operates independently of any single operator or organization. No central authority can alter rules, revoke access, or shut down the service, ensuring resilience and user autonomy.
- Open Source Commitment: The entire XMTP stack—protocol, applications, and developer tools—is fully open to inspect, modify, and improve. This transparency fosters a trustworthy foundation for developers and encourages a vibrant, collaborative ecosystem.
Ephemera, as the core contributor, is not only advancing the XMTP protocol but also developing applications like Convos, a next-gen messaging app built with privacy and money at its core. Furthermore, Ephemera recently acquired and open-sourced Converse, making it available for the entire XMTP network, further expanding the toolkit for developers.
The new funding will be instrumental in scaling the XMTP network, enhancing its core protocol, and fostering a vibrant ecosystem of developers and applications building on its robust foundation. This investment underscores the growing demand for secure, interoperable, and user-owned communication in the decentralized web.
